Maitreyi Ramakrishnan never had a part-time job. She never worked retail, or had an after-school job in food service. The story of her actual first job is well known: she submitted a tape to Mindy Kaling’s open casting call for the series Never Have I Ever. She beat out 15,000 other applicants for the role, and has delivered a memorable, comedic, and authentic performance over the show’s last four seasons as Devi, the feisty, awkward and determined nerd—with aspirations of being popular. Devi was no stranger to making a reckless decision for the sake of good grades or chasing a boy.
Avery and Maitreyi chat about how her high school experience in Mississauga, Canada, (close to where Avery is from) was very different from Devi’s, the importance of having a tight inner circle to keep you grounded and her biggest lessons from Never Have I Ever as the show comes to an end.
Plus, Maitreyi opens up about the difficulties of making friends as an adult, and the boundaries she's had to put up to protect herself from being used for her fame.
