Years working from home—even before the pandemic made it the norm—has given me a front-row seat to my own aging. I've spent over five years staring at myself on-screen, analyzing every expression and angle. I know aging is natural (it’s the luckiest thing in the world to get to do, an honor really), but that doesn’t mean it’s always easy. It’s something I’m learning to accept more gracefully, day by day.
In the past year or so, I began to notice some big changes that were impossible to ignore: a softened jawline, my neck being a bit looser, lip lines (probably from the straws of copious iced lattes), and crows' feet that multiplied with every smile. Again, there’s nothing wrong with these signs of aging; I just wasn’t used to seeing them on my face.
If I were working in an office instead of staring at myself on Zoom, I might not have noticed these changes so acutely because I would’ve been out in the world living instead of watching a livestream of me getting older. I want to embrace how I look while also being open to and testing out tools, products, and treatments that help me feel a little bit more like the me I see in my head—not the one I see when I click “Join Meeting.”
I’m a skincare obsessive. I spend my hard-earned money on quality creams and facials. I get Botox. It’s something I genuinely enjoy, and if I knew then what I know now, I would’ve gone to school for this and opened up my own medispa (in another life).
I'd seen the LYMA Laser floating around the skincare-obsessed corners of my internet. Skincare guru and facialist to the stars Joanna Czech uses it on clients. Gwyneth Paltrow, Jennifer Aniston, Hailey Bieber, Rosie Huntington-Whitely, Miranda Kerr, among many other A-listers, are obsessed. But it was the before and after pics that fully convinced me.
This sleek, futuristic-looking device claims to improve everything from wrinkles to redness to acne, all from the comfort of your own home (office). No downtime, no needles, no pain. Just science and consistency. So, I reached out to Lyma and asked to try it for myself. Every day… for three months.
What is the LYMA Laser, exactly?
The LYMA Laser is a $2,695 (I know 😢, not cheap) medical-grade, at-home laser that uses Low-Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) at a frequency of 808nm, meaning its cold, near-infrared laser light penetrates deep beneath the skin’s surface. It's FDA-cleared, totally painless, and safe for all skin tones and types. Essentially, the laser stimulates your skin’s mitochondria (haven’t thought about that word since high school science class!) – think of them as the batteries in your cells – to repair and regenerate at a deeper level. It works beneath the surface, where the good stuff happens: collagen production, skin tightening, and inflammation reduction. It empowers the skin to produce more collagen and elastin. As more “building blocks” are present, the skin can retain water and become more hydrated, holding onto the plumpness that is lost as we age.
So, what was my experience?
Neck, jowls, crows' feet… zapped! I used the LYMA Laser for 30-60 minutes a day, usually while watching TV or attempting to get my inbox to zero. I was VERY diligent. If I only had this thing for three months, I was going to get the most use out of it. I rarely missed a day, partly because the routine became genuinely enjoyable. There’s something incredibly calming about slowly moving a laser across your skin, knowing you’re doing something kind to your future face.
The results? Subtle at first, and then unmistakable.
Unfortunately for me, I began to really notice changes around the 10-12 week mark – right when I had to return the device. My neck and jawline were firmer, my skin looked smoother, and to my surprise, the LYMA Laser became my secret weapon against breakouts. Anytime I felt a hormonal zit brewing underneath the surface, I’d hold the laser over it for a few minutes, and it wouldn’t come up to the surface and erupt. Meaning, I wouldn’t have to pop it and be left with a scar (even though the LYMA could also zap that away if needed).
Would I call the LYMA laser a miracle? No. But would I call it worth it? Absolutely.
The LYMA Laser didn’t turn back the hands of time; that wasn’t the point. What it gave me was a refreshed version of myself, one that felt aligned with how I feel on the inside. My skin felt tighter, wrinkles looked softer, and overall, my skin was dewy and glowing.
More importantly, this three-month experiment reminded me that aging doesn’t have to feel like fading. There’s power in carving out moments of self-care, even if it’s just a few minutes a day with a fancy laser. In a culture that often makes you feel like your relevance or expertise has an expiration date, investing in yourself (in whatever way that makes you happy) feels quietly rebellious. So no, I’m not the youngest one in the meeting anymore, but I’ve never felt more confident in myself, my work, my abilities, and yes, even my skin. And you can’t put a price on that.
